GUTTER STUDENT POLITICS

GUTTER STUDENT POLITICS

The United Christian Democratic Party has noted, with disgust, the stupid acts of violence that have resulted in the gutting of some parts of the North West University, formerly known as the University of Bophuthatswana.

The university came into being out of a need that was observed by the founding fathers of the then government.

It was built out of community donations and contributions to encourage ownership and instill the spirit of “Re na le rona”, we depend on ourselves or we have ourselves to look up to. The mafikizolos of today do not have an understanding of the origins of the institution.

It is regrettable that owing to misunderstanding and unreasonableness between the administration and students the nation has come out the loser.

We in the UCDP and we hope the greater South African community is strongly opposed to the lack of restraint and indiscipline displayed by the so-called students. They have displayed lack of tolerance. Tolerance is an attribute which educated people should have in abundance.

As matters stand the students have been sent home for an indefinite period. The staff both academic and administrative will go on with their lives, though with great difficulty. As for the students, they will miss the greater part of the academic life through their act of absurdity.

The silence and absence of the Minister of Higher Education, Blade Nzimande, in these times that call for vocal and visible leadership do not leave him covered in glory. He should do a real soul searching exercise and account to the nation on how he will salvage the future of the students and what interim measures he has on reconstructing the university. This is the time for reconstruction and development which was the flagship of the ANC on ascending to power.

Whatever it will take and cost, the government is called upon to ensure that the guilty ones are brought before the courts to account for their deeds while the future of deserving students is not ruined.
